As a result of personal teaching methods and preference of activities, the New York State Learning Standards applied below may change, and are only a suggested approach toward organizing your lessons.
Elementary and Intermediate: The Influence of New York City
Aaron Copland was born in Brooklyn in 1900. Throughout his life, he had a fascination with New York City, and regarded it as an example of an ideal modern city. In the late 1930s, he composed a piece of music entitled Quiet City. Visual artists such as Georgia O'Keeffe and Berenice Abbott shared this enthusiasm and created works of art inspired by this great metropolis. Have students analyze, and respond to photographs, city building plans and other aspects of life concerning NYC during this time period. Under the influence of historical New York City, students can then create a series of drawings based on the city's theme, or design their own idealistic version, including architectural and mapping plans.
