As a result of personal teaching methods and preference of activities, the New York State Learning Standards applied below may change, and are only a suggested approach toward organizing your lessons.

Elementary and Intermediate: Personal Homage
Aaron Copland composed Lincoln Portrait as a means of paying homage to a great president that he respected. Have students brain-storm in written and/or oral form about someone who has inspired and/or left a lasting impression on their own life, and tell how this person affected them. This person may be a parent, relative, public figure, or simply a person who has made a difference in their lives. Have students create a portrait emphasizing either a specific event, or their interpretation of this persons personality and life. Respond as a class to their final portraits, and have students take note of the interpretations discussed by their class mates, as well as noting their own feelings about the final outcome in a journal.

NYS Learning Standards: Arts
Standard 1: Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Arts
Standard 2: Knowing and Using Arts Materials and Resources
Standard 3: Responding to and Analyzing Works of Art
Standard 4: Understanding the Cultural Contributions of the Arts
