Dr. John Splaine teaches in the College of Education at the University of Maryland. He formerly taught History at Somersworth High School in New Hampshire, where he was the chair of the Social Studies department, and at Crossland High School in Camp Springs, Maryland. He is the co-author of the CD-ROM, A House Divided: The Lincoln-Douglas Debates, which has won five national awards. He has also co-authored two books on media literacy, Critical Viewing: Stimulant to Critical Thinking, and Educating the Consumer of Television: An Interactive Approach. In 1992 and 1996, he conducted focus groups for the Commission on Presidential Debates. He is the moderator of the recently released video, View Smart to Vote Smart. In 1995, Dr. Splaine was nominated for a Carnegie Foundation "U. S. Professors of the Year" award. He has been a consultant with C-SPAN since 1987.
