New York State Standards for Lesson Activity 13:
Local Elections

Social Studies
Standard 5:
Students will use a variety of intellectual skills to demonstrate their understanding of the necessity for establishing governments, the United States Constitution, the American governmental system, the governmental systems of other nations and international politics past and present.

The study of civics, citizenship, and government involves learning about political systems; the purposes of government and civic life; the differing assumptions held by people across time and place regarding power, authority, governance and law.

Performance Indicators:
Students will be able to:
  • Understand that social and political systems are based on people's beliefs.
  • Understand the structure of New York State and local governments, including executive, legislative, and judicial branches.
  • Identify their legislative and executive representatives of the local, state and national governments.
  • Understand the importance of local elections to determine the outcomes of local and national issues.

Mathematics, Science and Technology
Standard 2:
Students will access, generate, process and transfer information using appropriate technologies.

Performance Indicators:
Students will be able to:
  • Access needed information from printed media, electronic databases and community resources.
  • Access, select, collate, and analyze information obtained from a wide range of sources such as research databases, foundations, organizations, national libraries and electronic communication networks including the Internet.

English Language Arts
Standard 1:
Students will read, write, listen and speak for information and understanding.

Performance Indicators:
Students will be able to:

  • Interpret and analyze complex informational texts and presentations
  • Use Standard English skillfully effectively applying established rules and conventions for presenting information.
  • Present a controlling idea that conveys an individual perspective and insight into the topic.
  • Make distinctions about the relative value and significance of specific data facts and ideas.
  • Organize information according to an identifiable structure such as compare contrast or general to specific topics.

Standard 3:
Students will read write, listen and speak for critical analysis and evaluation.

Performance Indicators:
Students will be able to:
  • Present orally and in writing well-developed analysis of issues ideas and texts.
  • Make effective use of details, evidence and arguments and presentational strategies.
