Step 4: The National Convention

Scenario:
The National Convention for your party this year will be in New York City, media capital of the world. The convention will be held in Madison Square Garden. Thousands of people will be there. Everyone knows the nomination is yours. There are still a few things that must happen.

  1. You must pick a Vice President to run with you. This is pretty important. Check out the web sites on the real vice presidential candidates: Joseph Lieberman and Dick Cheney.
  2. The Party must write the platform. These are the basic ideas/beliefs of the party. Check out the Republican Party Platform in 2000. Then check out the Democratic Party Platform in 2000.
  3. You must give the speech of your life.

Activity 1: Choose a Vice President
Check out your fictional choices and decide which you will choose to run with you and explain why. Which do you think best compliments your candidacy and why? Brainstorm about the two choices for Vice President this year. Why did Al Gore choose Joseph Lieberman? Why did George W. Bush choose Dick Cheney?

Activity 2: Write a Party Platform
You must present your basic beliefs in an easy to read format. Take a look at the Platform Template. Fill in each of the spaces with your own views on the key issues that will shape this election.

Activity 3: Create Sound Bytes
The biggest speech of your life is here and this will be the biggest audience you ever address. Your advisors are working on some key phrases or sound bytes. They predict that these three phrases will be the highlights of the speech and will be played over and over on the television news. Write your three sound bytes- the ones you hope say something about you as a person and that you hope the press love and will repeat on television.
