Peter Kohler, Director of Editorial Services
Peter Kohler was named director of editorial services at Cablevision Systems Corp. in 1995, and is responsible for researching, writing and presenting editorials on Long Island, He also acts as editorial editor, supervising editorial services in Connecticut, and New Jersey.
Prior to joining Cablevision, Kohler served in varied journalistic and executive capacities for several years in broadcast television, primarily at CBS and later with the Gannett Co. Inc.
Cablevision editorials are scheduled on News12 Long Island, and appear on the hour on Tuesdays and Fridays. Editorials represent the opinions of the management of Cablevision as expressed through its editorial board and are not the responsibility of News 12.
As director of editorial services, Kohler returned to editorial writing after serving as editorial director at WCBS-TV in New York, and in print, where he began writing editorials at The Charlotte (NC) Observer. Over the years, his work has been recognized with many awards. Most recently, his editorials at Cablevision were recognized with the Bronze Medallion for best television editorial by Sigma Delta Chi (1997), and also as best editorial or television commentary by the New York State Associated Press Broadcasters in 1996 and 1997. Previously, his editorials at WCBS-TV were recognized with an Emmy Award from the NY Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.
Prior to joining Cablevision, Kohler served as Manship Chair Professor at the Manship School of Mass Communications at Louisiana State University. He joined the faculty there after serving as Vice President of the Gannett Broadcasting Group. He also worked at CBS for 19 years, as a vice president at the Broadcast Group and CBS Television Network, following earlier service with WCBS-TV as editorial director.
Kohler is a board member of the Cold Spring Harbor Whaling Museum, and serves as member of the vestry at St. Johns Episcopal Church in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y.
A graduate of Yale University, and the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, Kohler resides in Huntington with his wife, Margot, and son, Cameron.
