The Island Senior Symphony was created out of a genuine love of music. This volunteer orchestra was started in 1971 by Paul Rudoff to provide an opportunity for retired teachers, amateur, and professional musicians to maintain their skills in an orchestral setting.
The Island Senior Symphony is currently under the direction of Howard Cinnamon, who is an Associate Professor of Music and Coordinator of Music Theory at Hofstra University.
As a means of encouraging young musicians, the orchestra sponsors an annual Young Performers' Competition. This competition is open to students up to the age of 18 who study with a private teacher. The first prize, named in honor of the orchestra's founder, Paul Rudoff, is a $500 scholarship and a solo performance with the orchestra at one of its concerts. There is a second prize of $200, named in honor of Seymour Monat, a long-time member of the orchestra.
